In August 2007, 20 year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were viciously beaten in a local park - targeted simply for looking different. The two fell into comas as a result of the attack, and Sophie died from her injuries thirteen days later.
Sophie's mother Sylvia set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation shortly afterwards, and the charity has worked tirelessly to Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere. They seek to create a lasting legacy for Sophie; challenge the negative perception of people from alternative subcultures by providing educational sessions and resources; and campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation altered to include a sixth strand protecting alternative subcultures. Sylvia was recently awarded an OBE for her work.
Personally, I have never followed any crowd and I've always been happy to express my own individuality. At the time of Sophie's death, I was an outcast because of this and often had to deal with verbal abuse from my peers and even some adults. I firmly believe that everybody has the right to be themselves in whichever form they choose, and not be victimised or made to suffer for it. I'm honoured to be able to support S.O.P.H.I.E and its ethos through my art.
